04 XC70 Dash lights

Post by turbotim2 »

I have read through the manual and can't seem to find the fuse for the instrument lights. All other interior lights are working.

Anyone have any ideas as to why my dash lights would go out? It is the gauge illumination lights and lcd backlights in the instrument cluster and radio.

I did some more investigating.
* None of the fuses under the hood or in the dash are bad.
* With the car running, the high beams will not stay on, they come on when I pull the lever but won't stay on.
* The headlight switch will not turn off the DRL's when switched to the running lights only position.
* All exterior lights are working.
* Flashers are all working normally.
* The cluster brightness switch does not change anything when moved through it's cycle.
* All of the gauges and warning lights are working normally.
* The radio works but you can not see the display.
* The LCD's for the odometer and clock are working but no back-lighting.

Thank you for any advice!

Did you get any codes?

There are no codes. This morning I started it and it was dark. I tapped the headlight switch and got the dash lights to come on but no backlighting. Front and rear fog lights do not work but the fuel door does.

I drove the car again and tapped a little harder on the switch and all of the lights are back on and functioning normally. I suspect a faulty switch or connection. When I get home I will check the connectors on the back of the switch. Does anyone have a quick tutorial on removing the switch?

You press it out after removing the fuse box panel on the side of the dash if its like my 2005 - pretty sure it is.

Its a snap fit. Just try to do it above -15F for the sake of the plastic

Thanks, I got it out last night. Two metal tabs on the top of the switch and one on the bottom. Pretty easy.

It was a bad switch. Put a new (used) one in and it's all better.
