My 1996 Volvo 850 was in an accident and the radiator was damaged which allowed coolant into the transmission cooler. I've replaced the radiator but now I am wondering how to get as much contaminated trans fluid out of the transmission as possible before I refill it. I know I can pull the drain plug, but there will still be fluid in the transmission itself. If I leave the lines that go to the transmission disconnected from the new radiator/cooler and start the car, will it pump out the remaining contaminated fluid? If so, do I need to put the car in drive to do this? Obviously, I am concerned about damaging the transmission so any input on how to avoid doing so would be appreciated.

With the car in park, disconnect the top line from the radiator, and hook a clear tubing onto it leading to a container. Start the car with trans in park, and it will start pumping fluid. Your best bet is to do a continuous exchange until you get bright pink fluid pumping out of the trans. That will take about 14 quarts. You can feel very comfortable using cheap DexIII from Walmart for this procedure, thats what I give all of my 850/x70 transmissions.
