Trouble inserting ignition key 98 V70

Post by SonicAdventure » Thu Jan 18, 2018 10:18 pm

I see from reading various posts that sometimes there is a problem removing the key from the ignition related to the automatic gear shifter, but I’m having the opposite problem: the key randomly will give trouble going in. Intermittent issue started about 3 weeks ago. Never was a problem before. Turning the wheel left or right seems to help it go in but there is no pattern to what will or not make it work. This is happening with different keys so I’m assuming the trouble is either in the switch or in the shift interlock.

Could I get a junkyard ignition switch and swap out my lock tumbler or is the lock tumbler usually the issue? Thanks.

The part the key goes in is the tumbler and that is where your having problems.

Before you start tearing it apart, try this.
  • Place one small drop of Multi-Purpose oil on the tip of the key, Like 3-IN-ONE Oil.
Slide the key in the tumbler.
Work the key (in and out) and (back and forward between position 0 and I) to spread the oil.
Quite often all it takes is a little lube to keep the tumbler from binding up.

Don't forget to clean up any excess oil.

I went to a locksmith for a non volvo vehicle and he used a synthetic grease call lockshot. It worked fantastic and even brought back a door lock that I had given up on.

So, I only had got one original Ymos key when I got this car. Bought two Italian made Ilco Volvo blanks on eBay and had the local Volvo dealer make copies of the original. The Ilcos were chrome plated brass, the Ymos key seems to be all steel or nickel plated steel.

I have been using the Ilcos for about 2.5 years and they have worn down a little and now I’m having this problem. I’m wondering if the Ilcos are really substandard metal quality, and they have been leaving deposits in my ignition switch that have built up.

I got the Ymos out last week and it turns fine with very little bind up. I should say that the issue is not so much that the keys won’t go in as they won’t turn unless you jiggle them. So far I have shot some graphite into the tumblr and I’m using the Ymos key, and it seems to have gotten better, but I don’t want to find myself out in the middle of nowhere someday with a car that won’t turn on...I’d like to head this off at the pass so to speak, and if there is some known issue with these tumblers like a lock mechanism that can be removed, cleaned or adjusted, I’d like to do it now rather than later.
