Help me price a 1989 Volvo 240?

Post by cpav13 »

A few years back I inherited my former high school English teacher's 240, after I told him 10 years previous to "not sell that car before calling me."

Now it's time for the car to move on, and I have no idea what I should ask. These seem at least a little collectible, especially living just outside of Boulder CO.

The car has 268k+ miles and a host of moderate to critical issues. The exhaust is busted off near the manifold, the tires are shot, there are a couple of broken lights, and it appears the transmission seals have finally given up. (When I moved it to clean it out, I found about a 1/4 cup of fluid on the driveway.) Honestly, if this were a Chevy from 1989, I'd have already sent it to scrap. But it's a classic Volvo 240 wagon :-)

The body is almost entirely rust free, and the engine is humming along. It was regularly making 100+ mile trips when I parked it two months ago. I could imagine this being a good start for a collector to merge with something else, or to begin restoring. But I don't know much about the Volvo 240 world, only that this is the best place to go for questions about Volvos. What would you sell this car for in your part of the world?

I'll upload pictures below, and if you'd like to see a video, it's the last upload in this Google Photos album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/bZa7CReq7s7eLgq32.

A rust free vehicle, but one with issues, is ideal for those mechanically engaged, if driveline is mechanically fit for duty.

Redblock engines can last a longtime if previous owners changed oil/filter religiously, and if miles driven were more highway based, and without excessive mountain driving (hilly terrain).

I don't see a 240 being considered as a collector vehicle, most all are daily drivers, and junk yard pickens are getting slimer and slimer.

Around my rural area, and in many rural areas generally, if a vehicle runs, its worth $500.00; and in my county, I'm the only one with Volvos. Many people are skiddish about "foreign cars," around here. So, a vehicle out here is just transportation, when at a lower price.

Myself, if I perceived transmission and engine were still intact (small leaks can be fixed), I'd give around $1k for it, if I lived nearby. I suspect I might end up spending from $500.00 to $1k to make it more dependable. [[Those newer spark plug wires for instance, would be replaced with OEM spec'ed wires...chances are, you have harder winter starts with it now.]] Needless to say, a mechanically challenged person would spend several grand to do what I would do to it.

I know of a Volvo geek, some 380 miles away, who might have an interest, but I'm not sure if he has the funds since he sold his house and bought a house in anther city recently. I'll pass along your photos.

'89 with 268,000 miles, private party transaction: $400 -$800 depending on condition.
That sample does have condition issues so figure the lower end of the range.

Will Craigslist be used?
