Last huge long theory was a work in process took time to put into words. You snuck in post at 14.00 (with the green circle). Yes either or both bits B and C are probably that. Combine some of my theory, these broke off a long time ago and were lodged in the passage between the pump and the filter.

Bits B and C actually nest together. They are one piece that was broken in two. You don't have the advantage of knowing but the back sides (not shown) are all chewed up and it happened recently. I know this because the gouged up surface is shiny and sharp with burrs I can scrape off with my fingernail. Aluminum will oxidize and and turn a dull grey fairly quickly. The burrs would have worn off a long time ago.

Are you saying you confirmed it is a catastrophic failure not a latent failure?

I will know more (maybe) when I take the old pump off and look at all of the evidence inside. I'm going to enjoy Christmas and worry about it in a few weeks. For now the volvo is on Christmas break - literally.

The fact that my car sounds like a garbage disposal with ball bearings in it indicates to me that there's a gear salad in the oil pump now - plenty of metal fragments that may be too big to escape doing more damage

What my comment meant is that the two parts I retrieved from the oil filter on Friday did not break off years ago and sit dormantly somewhere until a few weeks ago when they suddenly blocked oil flow. Something hard almost certainly got into the pump and it became like a grinder. Whether the hard thing was piece of that section circled in green that fatigued over the years and broke off catastrophically being tossed into the grinder causing more damage OR it was a piece of one of the gear teeth that broke off and caused the pieces of the circled section to fail remains to be seen. In either case it ended badly.
