Buy or run away? S80 first gear slips

So it's an 06 S80 non turbo, immaculate, for $1000. But first gear is slipping pretty noticeably. All other gears solid. 32mpg at level freeway cruise.

Is this likely to be a very difficult fix, or something you can drop the tranny pan and swap out some parts?

Asking for a friend (yah, right!)

What would make only gear 1 slip badly?

It shuddered too much when starting in second, and wouldn't engage at all in drive from a stop. Sounded like too much bad news in there.

I saw you "ran away" but I will give you my thoughts. If it has the GM 4t65E transmission figure $300 in parts and fluids to do an in car rebuild of the transmission. Basically you are buying a full transmission rebuild kit and replacing all the clutches, steels, gaskets and o-rings.

It is not difficult - numerous videos on Impala in car rebuilds. Just support the engine, lower the subframe - remove the CV and related on the left, disconnect the same on the right, lower the driver side of engine so that the valve body cover has room to clear and dig in. Scare factor rates a 10, actual work more like a 6-7.

If you search you will some guys that have done a tranny rebuild on the AWD versions - the FWD is the same for what one would do in car.

If you have VIDA look at the service procedure to do a valve body and you will get the idea.

That's awesome info. But it also had mildew damage, odd interior smells, and heater core issues: too many unknowns for me.

But I'll be a little less afraid of any other tranny's given your input! Thanks.
