...and mine was still going strong at 198K miles.

I did get the free ETM download at my local, friendly Volvo dealer!

So this morning I checked and gaped the plugs they were set at .48 so went back to .28 per plug specs. They seem to be just over finger tight,so fixed that.I didn’t hear any popping while it was just sitting. Will put some mile on it shortly. Will let y’all know. George I would love a FREE ETM download. My local Volvo is 1.5hrs away.

Those plugs probably weren't set to 048, they have worn - and Ill guess they have about 80,000 miles on them.

Time for new ones! Get the Bosch copper at about $3 bucks each - no need for the latest Pu-UnOb alloy in plugs

If you pull the dipstick, do you see fumes? Put the dipstick back and remove the oil filler cap, does the noise go away ? If so, the PCV may be clogged. Also try the PCV glove test, see on youtube

To jquick1: As I recall the ETM download was "Service Campaign 115".
The letter said it was for cars which hadn't reached 10 years of age or 200,000 miles.
That means the campaign ended during 2012 for our 2002's.

Several enthusiasts said it relocated the wear spot on the mylar film to another location where the iron oxide (like recording tape) hadn't been worn away.
Others said it changed the way ETM error codes were tallied to reduce the number of times the CEL would come on.

Notifications like these are why I register any used car I buy with the manufacturers main office.

If you decide to ask your dealer about this I suggest doing it in person. See if they even have this campaign cataloged.
I'd bet they'll want to charge you for the service (surprise-surprise).

If or when the ETM breaks down you can, at least here in Sweden, get them rebuilt for $3-400. The throttle sensor is replaced with a contact free model. The ETM on these early models is a CAN node of its own which is why you can't just replace it. It needs to be reprogrammed for a new car.

The later Bosch unit is just a throttle controlled by the CEM.

The plugs and coils(off name brand) have less then 100 miles on them. Done the GLOVE check was fine. So I put the original Volvo coils back in car. checked for leaks, broken wires and cleaned MAS and Throttle body etc. Was told the Throttle Body came from a car with 81k. Still has the blow back every now and then. Going to change gas filter tomorrow.
