Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.

Took it to the mechanic the other day. They quoted me close to $4k, so I decided to do most of it myself.

Today I tackled:
- New Distributor, Plugs, Wires (which included pulling oil from the spark plug wells - someone once told me to use a pipette. A+ advice there)
- New Intake Cam Seal.
- Pulled my intake to change out the oil trap. Unfortunately, bought the wrong oil trap (I need two hoses on top, this one only has one) so I'm sitting on it until Monday when the parts come in.
- Replaced Thermostat and ETC (fun fact - if you have the intake off for any reason, go ahead and do this. You will feel spoiled by how much extra room there is!)

Cool thing is that this is the third or fourth time I've pulled that intake off, so all of this took me about 3 hours (not including a supply run to grab some hoses that I might need later on) compared to the 6 or 7 the last time I pulled the intake.

Still to come this weekend is the exhaust cam seal (pending a reply to a help post I made on here earlier this evening), then once I get the right oil trap (dumbest Volvo-related thing I've done in awhile), I'll be putting that in, replacing a vacuum line or two, and putting it all back together. All that should take me another 3 or 4 hours.

So 8 hours of my life, plus $150 in parts is going to save me from paying a mechanic $1500 (the rest of the quote was the *other* cam seals and an RMS - two things I do NOT feel confident doing myself right now).

After you're done with the PCV you may find that those leaks either decrease, or are eliminated all together.

There is a T10 small Torx screw in the side of the connector that has to be removed. It is a stop to prevent the connector working loose. I sprayed the connector with some silicon oil and then carefully turned the connector at the door pillar with a large pair of adjustable pliers. Once moving it is easier to turn by hand. You have to turn it a fair amount to unscrew it. then it separates.

The harder part is to open the connector on the door side. I will see if I can find some pictures I think I took and post them once I find them to try to clarify.

Eventually you have to peel the rubber sheath back to get into the wires to check them. I found 2 wires that had cracked insulation and one broken though completely.

Well done! you just paid your self $200 an hour and trained yourself on saving even more with the magical elixir of powder milk biscuits, giving us the strength to get up and do what needs to be done

One day I'll open a shop and be rolling in cash...
It's always easier doing something the second time. I've gotten strut replacement down to 45 minutes after doing it 4-5 times. Same with the CV axle replacement. I've had to do that WAY too many times... never buy a reman passenger side axle! Used genuine or new only! Or the reman from Raxles or wherever everybody here recommends.

Amtrak works better fir this as waze gets fooled into thinking you are actually on 9/20. I got a nice 110 mph snapshot the other week
