2003 V70M56 drive shaft part numbers 8252049 (8602578)(8603793)

At the Volvo dealer I recently had front end work; CV boot inner and outer one side, lower ball joints and control arm bushings all four replaced, axel shaft replaced and was able to drive normally for a few days. After 10 days the car would not go into any gear. This happened after backing down the driveway and cranking steering wheel to the left. Towed to the dealer who said the transmission needed to be replaced to the tune of $8K. I researched and found that often the axel shaft or some connection in the drive shaft can be off and this would happen. So, I had the car towed to an independent shop that works on Volvos and they were able to put axel back in and the car ran fine through all gears. 2 day later it happened again, my husband backed down the driveway, cranked the steering wheel left and could not get the car into any gear. If anyone can guess whats happening I would like to hear it!

Installing the drive shaft in the transmission

S4301795 Lubricate the mating surface at the end of the drive shaft. Use wheel bearing grease P/N 116 1241-3 (80 g). Press the drive shaft into the transmission.
Check that the lock goes into the groove by pulling the drive shaft constant velocity joint.

S4302445 Tighten the drive shaft screw. Use a new screw. Counterhold using a crow bar in the brake disc. Tighten. See Tightening torque .

Can you name that dealer? Please go on local.google.com search them and leave a review about this. I would also complain to Volvo US if this turns to be a small fix, to me replacing the transmission sounds like broad light thievery - very common to Volvo dealers.

Does this happen when the wheel is turned at full lock? Do you see this part on the control arms (each has one located towards the front of the car):

Other possibilities the axle may not be the correct part number (the axle would be too short causing the locking clip not to engage) or there may be a problem with the CV joint. A much easier possibility is incorrect locking circlip on the axle.

I would have the trusted mechanic remove the axle and inspect everything around, and maybe install a used axle just to test (don't buy a new one, just try a used one).

Thank you for all the suggestions -
I looked up the axel shaft part number listed on the dealer invoice and I assume put in the car by the dealer - #8252037. On eEuroparts.com that part number is listed for automatic transmissions.
The axel shaft part number on that site for manual transmissions is #8252035. They do look different in the accompanying photos.
The car has a manual transmission.
The dealers work and parts are warranted so I am tempted to take it there but since they told me it was the transmission I don't know if they are competent. They should correct this mess they made but I am afraid to trust them with my car.
I have been sending documentation to Volvo and they have told me to work it out with the Service Manager at the dealership.
The Service manager said he would reimburse the cost of the independent shop and my rental car, but I don't know what to expect going forward.

Garages have a certain 'language'. Sometimes, when they don't want to work on the car any more for some reasons, they will either give you a large bill (i.e. transmission replacement), either say they can't see anything wrong with 'it'. They just act like that, it's common. There are good dealers and there are bad dealers. If there is no other Volvo dealer nearby, I would at least show them the numbers of the axle. I don't think manual axle is the same as automatic, I would be surprised. I remember someone comparing side by side two axles and one had a shorter length at the spline end that goes into the transmission: if it's too short the locking clip won't engage and the axle will pop out when the wheels are turned to full lock. It is very possible they did a mistake, or maybe the correct part wasn't available for some reasons and now they don't want to spend more money. If they still keep saying the part is the correct one, no much to do, only an independent garage can help. I would record them when they say they will pay if the repair is done at an independent garage, because it is very easy for them to tell later they've never said that.

When the dealer told us that our car needed a transmission $8K we decided that it was time to get a new car, we only have one car, so while figuring out if it was worth finding a used transmission or if we should junk the car, I went car shopping; Nissan Pathfinder&Rouge, Toyota Highlander&RAV4, Lexus 450&350Hybrids, BenzGLA250. We decided to get another Volvo (XC60 T-5 Momentum) and although we did oversees delivery with the V70, this time we had the dealer modify a car that was in the pipeline to them. It is set for delivery in late March. This will be our third Volvo. I think they should treat us better when it comes to keeping our V70 around as a second car, they should be happy to help or at least not harm and if they think we should take it elsewhere for repairs why not just come out and say it? UPDATE - The wrong axel shaft was installed, the one for automatic transmissions. After the correct shaft for manual transmissions(a bit longer) was installed the car seems to be operating normally again, at least the shaft has not fallen out again! And to think that we might have junked the car for $150! Dealer towed the car in gratis and installed correct axel shaft at no additional cost. That was the right thing to do!
