Hi all... I'm new to the forum, and will hopefully be an owner soon..
Im about to buy from a friend an xc90 that has been on its side, only side airbags deployed and amazingly hardly any damage to the car apart from rear door and rear light damaged.. it stopped on a rock so damaged the door but not the pillar.
Obviously the car now has airbag light on and will not start.
I have seen side curtain airbags and control units are cheap enough on ebay.
Question is, if i fit the new bags and Ecu, will anything need reprogramming or will it be plug and play. I actually live in spain and not many volvo dealers around here..
He said when it went on its side the engine stopped immediately so im assuming there is an engine cut out to prevent damage?
airbag advice needed please

This is a good question, sorry I don't have an answer.
Can you hook the car up to a computer and see if you have a code?
It is pretty clear you have a safety feature that has been activated - question is which is it and can it be reset without replacing the ECU.

Hopefully he is honest about the engine stopping immediately, but I have a doubt. No one will start thinking about the engine when the car has almost rolled over, most won't know if the engine stopped right away. If the engine continued to run for a little when the car was flipped, there would be no lubrication to the rod bearings, etc.
Fixing an airbag system that has deployed is more than just replacing the airbags, I believe the retractable seat belts also need replaced and there may be more. Realistically, the SRS system should be inspected by a main dealer to be safe to drive.
As for the non start, it may be what is described at the post at the bottom of the page here

The Volvo XC 90, does not have a fuel inertia switch. The system is set up, so that if the air bags deploy, the SRS module will send a signal to the Central Electrical Module (CEM), to immediately kill power to the fuel pump and stop the engine.
In the event any air bags deploy, you will need VIDA-DiCE or a advanced scanner to get the CEM out of crash mode.
