Haldex or Vc in my 2001 xc70?

We just got the car. Was told thats what the problem is. Extremely loud whining, then it will finally make a loud clunk, then it's better.
My husband has had to learn how to work on volvos, there's no dealership/ mechanics for at least 300 miles. This is the first cross country we've owned, so we are perplexed. How can we tell which it's running?
I don't want to buy the wrong part, as they are expensive, but how can i tell the difference? Do the parts look different? Can we tell just by looking at it?please please help us! Thank you, Heather

A visual inspection helps, get under there and see if there's any haldex fluid dripping from the pump. That's what mine is doing.

Get the Volvo diagnostics software and scan for codes.

Try the troubleshooting flowchart on the xemodex website.

Search through and watch youtube videos.

2001 does not have Haldex. It is a purely mechanical design.

I am puzzled by your description of the problem. I don't know what would do that.

You need to get under the car and look at the prop shaft (drive shaft) and the two pieces it connects to (differentials) plus the center support bearing.

Nothing special and pretty straight forward and robust design.

I think you should back up a bit (figuratively) and evaluate transmission, driveaxels, and driveshaft before throwing parts at it.

Do you have a friendly independent mechanic who will let you go under it on a lift while running and checking for loose parts? Thats the quick way to assess everything.

The 2001 had a neutral stop feature that was hard on the transmissions - that software should be updated and that feature removed.

We do have some guys here that can fix some software problems over he internet very reasonably.
