Hi, have obtained a 2002 xc70 (BT5244T3 Vin YV1SZ58K721067290) that came to me after someone had changed the cam seal on the exhaust cam, moving the variable timing hub in the process. The car was running erratically and surging at idle.
I have replaced the timing belt and tensioner, rest the timing as per Vida and replaced the variable valve timing solenoid, as the old on had a damaged connector (split).
Car started and ran fine with good throttle response. drove the car approx 100klm and it started surging at idle, and stalling when coming to a stop. Engine fault light illuminated at restart.
Lifted the top timing belt cover to discover badly burnt solenoid valve, photo attached.
Error codes as follows;
6410 Exhaust camshaft reset valve: signal to low (Permanent Fault)
6800 Turbo Control Valve: Signal to low (Permanent Fault)
4000 Cannister Purge Valve Signal to Low (Permanent Fault)
6110 Engine cooling fan relay signal to low (Permanent Fault)
130A Air leakage intake.
Previous history of the car is largely unknown.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Replace that solenoid and gasket, then clear codes, see what comes back

It looks like those trouble codes are largely related to the cam solenoid. Those solenoid usually crack when someone unplug them and then caused higher resistance causing melting of the plastic housing. I hope that's not the solenoid you already replaced.

Almost seems like someone forgot to hook back up a bunch of electrical connectors when doing work on the engine. If not, then a problem with fuses/relays/wiring harness.
