The turbos are also fine and at least on - 01 models they barely ever break down as long as you don't use crude oil. The 2.5T is much nicer to drive than the 2.4T and the NA.

The reality of buying an old Volvo is that most owners just don't maintain them. I expect to get the car to a good running condition allow $1500-2000 to get the car back to good reliable condition. For me the #1 issue is maintenance records. Even if it doesn't have a full history the last 4-5 years is the most important is chances are any bigger issue have been covered. If the records are available then scrutinize them for 'repair declined' or deferred. Usually have big $$$$ repairs and the reason for selling. Owners become instantly forgettable on these issues and seldom declare them as they won't sell them otherwise.
I thin a couple of the guys have mentioned it, but unless you absolutely need an AWD avoid them like the plague. AWD system improved around 2004 but too many issues and complexity if stuff goes wrong. P80 AWD's now have many obsolete parts for the AWD system.
I'd look at a non-turbo base model if you wan a good simple run around. Don't worry about the ETM 'issue'. A Xemodex repair through FCP Euro (you ship direct) costs less than $500 and there is a fairly good chance it has been replaced already. Condition and maintenance is more important than age.

I've heard a lot about the 960 the last time I went looking, and found some good stuff, but a LOT of negative reviews of it. It could be a great car, but I'm still kinda biased towards the 850/V70 engine

That's a fair way to at it. I've taken a look at them and couldn't find my way through as easily. I'm way too comfortable with the inside of an 850.
Either way, it's kind of a moot point anymore lol. Got some financial news that means I need to make my 850 with busted cam seals and RMS last at least another year

Nothing wrong with 960. 960 and S90 had the 2.9 straight six, excellent transmission, and standard with heavy anti slip independent rear axle giving the car 4 wheel independent suspension. You are thinking of the 700 and 200 series with the not so good PRV V6. June

Wall street tip - how do you know when a stock is a dog? When it gets downgraded to 'Buy'
