2004 XC90 T6 UP28 brake vacuum pump clicking

Post by wheelman55 »

On my 2004 XC90 T6.

The brake vacuum pump, UP28, was clicking upon cold start this morning.
  • it was cold. Negative 5 farenheit.
    • The pump would rapidly click for a second, repeating every ten seconds.
      • the noise went away when the engine warmed up
Is this a pump going bad or something else, like the switch?

    Thanks for the help.

Had this on mine a couple "winters" ago. As I recall, it was related to the turbo vacuum/boost plumbing. I think I replaced a hose connector. But I am old and forgetful. Best of luck, let us know.
Current Volvos:

1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

FLXC90...I can "feel" the clicking when I touch the pump. Did you have this symptom on yours?

It sounds to me like that clicking is your pump trying to come on when it should which is when you first start the car, can you hear the pump whirring? The pump is designed to only come on a few times when the car is cold then does not run again. Sounds like the pump is shot.

Though my T6 is a 2004 S80 it also has the vacuum pump too. Years ago I noticed a plastic sensor with wires going to it had popped off a vacuum line that is about the diameter of the vacuum line going to the power break booster but down below the air cleaner.

I took it straight to Volvo and was told it was common for them to pop off due to the high under hood temperature of the T6. Once it has come off it must be replaced or shortly damage to the pump would result so I was told. I'll take a picture tomorrow of the sensor. I noticed it quickly so my pump is still running strong years later. June

Or to be safe, go to Volvo's website under the owner tab to access your owner's manual.
