How to jump start another car using a V70?

Post by mdewalle » Sat Feb 24, 2018 11:37 am

The other day I was at a gas station and the guy next to me had a dead battery and asked me for jumper cables. I had the cables but when I opened my hood I realized I didn't know where to hook up both cables. I knew my battery is in the trunk, but when I took a look at that it became clear that it's a project to get to that.

We used my cables but a third car to get the guy going. Is there a way to hook up both cables under the hood on a Volvo to start someone else's engine?

There's a plus terminal behind the air filter box that works well for this. It's got a small plastic flap over it with a plus sign on it.

I never had luck using the red connector under the hood along with a ground near the engine. The engine would simply not crank. Maybe I didn't use the right ground point.

However it worked every time when attaching the cable at both poles at the battery inside the trunk. Reason why I threw away the battery cover and just keep a piece of cloth over the posts (just as an extra safety feature so as not to ground the red post). Gives access right away to the battery if needed.

I've kept the plastic cover for my S60. The plan is to cut away both corners than reattach those pieces with some sort of hinge so that I can get to the battery terminals with jumper cables without going through the trouble of removing the plastic cover. I agree it's so much easier to jump start another car from the battery in the back. I did it once, removed the cover, and never put it back. I used part of a large inner tube draped over the battery to protect the terminal.

I've used the hood connectors a few times and it's works like a charm. I connect the ground wire to the ground connectors on the inside of the fender.

Both starting my own car and helping start others.

Will keep that in mind for the next time, as a grounding point.

Whilst on the subject of grounds

Post by Georgeandkira » Sat Feb 24, 2018 4:45 pm

Remember that there's an engine ground strap fairly low on the right side (passenger's side No.America) going to the firewall.
They can corrode away so inspect yours once in a while.
I'm not recommending this braided strap as a jumping ground.
I open the jumper's black clamp and bite two of the bolts on the fender's edge.
