It's been a process of several months (comedy of errors on my end), but I'm getting around to installing my rebuilt cylinder head. I got the head back today and discovered the rebuilder pulled the VVT hubs off the camshafts to check valve adjustments. I sent the camshafts down with the head for the valve adjustment portion and figured I'd simply put the camshafts back in with the VVT hubs attached and align the timing belt. I marked the camshaft gears with yellow pen paint around the bolts so it would have been easy. Get the camshafts to near perfect timing with a hairy eyeball on the sensor end, install the cam gears using paint marks and install timing belt. That plan went south quick. My gut is still churning several hours after the discovery.
I tried searching, but failed to find the process to install & adjust them. Looks like I'm purchasing a cam shaft locking tool at the very basic to start. Anyone know of a step-by-step?
On the brighter side, head looks like new!

You will find lots of threads on overtightening the cam lock tool bolts and really creating a Charlie foxtrot

Know of a good video or step-by-step guide to re-installing the VVT hubs onto the camshafts? Mine has two of course (you know, just to make it more difficult). The comedy of errors continues... enough where about about ready to scrap the car... after a $500 head rebuild job.

After the hubs are on, check the VVT angles discrepancy in VIDA, it should be less than 4 degrees. I managed to install one with 1 degree error and the other one just perfectly, fraction of a degree.

I read in VIDA 2011C for MY05 anything above 8 degrees VVT would not be able to compensate (bent valves). Full engine power is achievable with less than 4 degrees. Unless memory is lying...
Under 4 degrees is very easy to do.

Just resist the temptation to line up all the timing marks, and follow the Volvo instructions about leaving it one tooth short on alignment, and you won't have to take it off and put it on twice.
the non CVVT cars are simpler, but once you understand how the VVT works, it isn't rocket surgery to get it right.
