Might add a another volvo to my collection

Post by Matt88ch »

So as most know I have a 2000 s70 got se, which is in prestine condition, I love the car and everything about it except that it's an auto, I've been looking for a 5 speed and found a silver one with 148k, it starts up but bogs out, sounds like timing might have skipped a tooth, it has leather, sunroof, power everything, black interior, I'm assuming it's a n/a and because of the engine troubles I've talked the guy down to 500$. Still waiting on details but I'm almost positive it's a n/a because it's a base model. Is 500 a good deal, since the engine might be fixable? Now let's say engine is shot, with the ECU matched to the turbo engines etc, would it be a possibility to either a) swap my turbo engine into the 5speed, or b) swap 5 speed into my turbo car? I'm a mechanic and have a lift and all my tools so I'd be doing labor myself, is it too much of a headache? Should I pass and look for a manual turbo one? Thanks guys

You did not mention what model the manual vehicle is.

Yes you can swap the manual into the auto car but the computer will need to be tuned which will likely not be a diy deal.

If the V70 is in decent shape cosmetically buy it. Then start troubleshooting it, there could be lots of reason why the engine is bogging down. Are there any codes present?

Converting a NA to turbo is more trouble than tge AT to MT conversion. At least for the pre ME7 (till 98) cars

Convert turbo auto to turbo manual, easy. Everybody has done one, well documented.

Convert n/a manual to turbo manual, hard due to very few people have done it and you'll be totally on your now if you have to troubleshoot.

Since it's Saturday morning I bet Matt88ch is physically seeing the car for the first time. He'll get back this thread with details.
Can't wait.

I considered a job like this and a pal who was very knowledgable and proficient and had his own shop said to me, "Why bother?"

Get a $500 car and fix it and sell it then get a car in the configuration you want, he'd say.

This kind of project comes up regularly on the Volvo boards and NEVER has ANYONE EVER mentioned having an ECU reprogrammed (parameterized, whatever) to digest the different data.

My car is a 2000 Volvo s70 2.4 turbo automatic, the other Volvo is a 1999 s70 base non turbo model with a manual transmission the car looks amazing inside and out and has 148k. Now I want to take tranny and might do swap as long as I will have no problem with fitment or tranny mount locations etc, gonna read up on it now, especially the ECU programming part

There are a few swap threads and if you have access to a junkyard car with a Mt 1999-2000 it’s doable

The 1999-2000 are “ bastards “ in between the p80 and P2 platform and so there may well be year specific parts. On the upside only cool people have 1999 and 2000 Volvos

That’s why Prince wrote a song about them

I would buy the whole car, not just the transmission, so I figured if I have the whole car I wouldn't need to do any "custom Fab" work, and I would have all bushings, brackets, sensors, etc. Only thing I don't get is the ECU and what exactly is needed, one guy said his swap runs fine on his automatic transmission stock tune, and others say I have to reprogram
