We live 70+ miles from a Volvo indy or dealer. I've found that I can do most general maintenance myself and would like to know if I can reset the service engine light and how to do so. I'd appeciate any suggestions.

The instructions are there: http://volvospeed.com/850slight.php

It's easy enough that I could do it myself, the first time around. However, I drive a Volvo 1995 850 Wagon. Should be similar for you. Volvo experts with more expertise than myself may want to weigh in on this.

Cheers!

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure a 98 will be different. It will have the OBDII connection instead of what the early 850's have. I know my 97 has OBDII and I can't reset my light without the proper tool. I have an OBDII reader, but it won't reset the service light.

I think the '98 is different and requires a special scanning tool.
That's what my mech. says. Others may chime in.

My book says -

Press and hold the trip reset button.

Switch ignition On.

Keep the trip reset button depressed until the service indicator light starts to flash (approx 10 seconds).

Release the trip reset button within 4 seconds of the light flashing.

Sorry Bill....that works on '99 and '00's but not on '98's.
He'll have to use a special reset tool.
I bought mine on eBay....made by DRAPER.
Look for DRAPER Volvo Reset tool....it wasn't much more than $50 or so.
These DRAPERS are all sent from the U.K.

I beg to differ with you....either the Volvo reset tool or one like I have. I have successfully turned off my light with the Draper every time. I understand that there are at least 2 others out there that will do this (made specifically for this reason), but code readers will not do it, and you're right in regards to, if you don't have one of these specific tools then the Volvo reset tool is your only other choice.

You're not disagreing, I said the same thing except you just added another tool.
Bottom line is he STILL needs a tool to do it
