Something strange I noticed looking on this site. Most engines for sale seem to have between 140k and 150k other than the 2.3 turbo which seem to be available under 100k. I wonder if that is the average mileage for transmission failure. It seems like a low number to me.

Abscate I looked and no 2004 T6 engines and only a couple 2.9, but page after page of S80 2.5 turbo 5cyl engines available most at 145k. Again interesting that mileage and where are the T6 engines At? Makes me wonder! June

Likely folks that believe the transmission is permanently sealed and will never require any service - until they have to replace it.

Jettas used to have this problem as well.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

I don’t think it’s necessarily mostly tranny failures. Cars do get scrapped when there’s a single huge expense like a transmission required, but at least as often it’s just a laundry list of medium expenses all happening in a row.

And that often happens sooner on the HPT 2.3 cars for a lot of reasons (more oil leaks, higher % of cars with AWD systems, arguably driven harder, etc. ...)

Hi All

Just doing some checking on the used engine site. There are a number of used engine sites on the net, notice many of them don't actually show a physical address. When I did a bunch of digging I found many of them are affiliated, sales are internet, engines come from salvage yards all over.

In this case " Buy Used Engines " is one of the " LKQ Companies " (n generally listed corp office in Chicago ) For one particular engine listed ( for a S60R engine ) I found it at an address 41247 East Huron River Dr in Belleville MI. That site is listed as LKQ recyclers ( same address and zip )

When I looked up BBB and ( other ) reviews I find BBB lists LKQ with a rating of D-, looking up other complaints a few hundred can be found ( NOT just for engines / transmissions )

As is usually the case caveat emptor

Just wanted to add

My meaning was not to denigrate LKQ, I have actually purchased a number of parts through them ( They have a HUGE selection of many parts by many makes ( LKQ Volvo, LKQ Toyota, Audi etc etc ) near Sacramento CA )but also yards all over the country , but most of those purchases have been via EBAY so I ( also ) have paypal to go to bat if I'm unhappy with what I get which is usually just trim parts and the like.

I've found that even thru CL or EBAY, bigger ticket items ( engines / trans ) are offered under a variety of " business names " that end up being like LKQ. I just seems like a lack of transparency
