Pmongii, I hope you're recuperating well!

It appears that the brunt of the impact was above the bumper, being absorbed mostly by the grill area and hood. This may have buffered the deceleration enough that the G force required for SRS deployment was never achieved - possibly to your advantage.

I've never personally been subjected to an airbag deployment, but from my understanding it's no picnic.

That is what I'm thinking. Milliseconds in deceleration times makes a big difference in the g-force. That is why they design the front ends to crumple on severe impact instead of ridge enough to withstand a severe impact.

I was thinking the same but then had a more careful look at the bumper itself. It definitely looks like it was pushed downwards by a lot, and also sideways by several inches especially on the driver's side where the crash box looks twisted, tossed an making an angle with the bumper (the metal part under the driver's side headlight remains).

The picture is not taken from the same angle so it makes the bumper appearing lower, but even so taking a reference to the top of the fenders, the bumper sits quite lower on the crashed car.

Hire a LAWYER
The airbags should have deployed, their answer is 100% BS. They're trying to convince you from not going any father and hiring a lawyer and investigating the actual car as to why they did not deploy. I think you may have a very good case.

Airbags are also called SRS, which stands for Supplemental Restraint System, so Volvo statement about airbags being a bonus is at least defensible.

A few years ago my son wrecked our Toyota Sienna minivan. He was driving on a residential street, exact speed unknown, but unlikely to be over 45MPH because of road curvature. He hit a tree head-on, which deployed the airbag. The airbag was what caused a large laceration on his forehead during the impact. Other than the gash on his forehead he also ended up with a broken ankle, but otherwise OK. I'm including a couple of pics of the minivan after the impact. This is nothing more than an anecdotal evidence of severity of impact required to deploy the airbag. Just remember that airbags are there to prevent your death, and will create their own injury to your face. If you walked away without too many scratches, then perhaps the airbags were not required, and you are better off that way.

You stated the front end impact was 'head on'. Head on with what may I ask? Another vehicle? Guardrail?

Was it direct, straight at the guardrail: POW!?

Or more of a 3/4s impact?

Or series of non-acute blows as the car was spinning?
