So I let the car sit in my driveway for 7 years, and I'm finally doing something about it. I have all the hoses, electrical, and exhaust disconnected. Ready to unbolt the mounts and pull it out. Apparently letting these things sit is a pretty common theme lol. So anyways, I got a b5234T3 from ebay. Has around 175k miles on it. My current motor blew out a cam seal and lost all the oil which resulted in bearing failure with about 125k miles on it.

So I came up with a parts list:. Let me know if you think any of these items are unnecessary or if I'm missing anything.

Volvo Engine Oil Pan Reseal Kit - Victor Reinz KIT-504577 (does this come with pickup tube o-ring?) comes w sealant 44.99 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... z-kit#desc
driver side cv axle Cardone 50.99 rockauto
passenger cv axle cardone 67.99 rockauto
timing belt (still replacing due to oil) 53.59 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... elt-274338
timing belt tensioner 109.39 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -9146693-2

Here are the Items I will re-use from the existing engine:

timing and serp pulleys

serp belt because it was new.

Plugs and wires will be re-used.

valve springs.

Any other basic engine components I should transfer?

I have a few questions:

1) can I re-use the cam followers from my existing engine since it has lower miles? Or do you think running out of oil trashed them?

2) Is the camshaft locking tool necessary? I don't recall needing one last time I did the timing belt, but it was a long time ago.

3) What is the best rebuild kit for the turbo? Will it be possible to rebuild since it was starved for oil?

4) Are the oil cooler and trans fluid cooler O-rings the same on the radiator? they appear to be.

5) Can I re-use the timing belt tensioner? It only has a few thousand miles on it.

6) Should I check the main and rod bearings from the used engine? It came out of a pretty brutally wrecked car (pretty sure the person probably died). Do these cars shut off the engine in a wreck? Hoping this one didn't run out of oil too because I paid a pretty penny for it.

7) What are your opinions on using non-oem crank and camshaft seals?

8) The PCV system was redone just before the engine took a crap, but the turbo was leaking a lot of oil, so not sure if the canister needs to be replaced because of this?

9) What is the best turbo rebuild kit?

I a bit jealous that you have the workspace and time to do this. I've been planning something similar in the future. I have thought about buying a used engine and doing a complete overhaul over am extended period of time since my engine isn't toast yet. It would be nice to have a fully rebuilt crate engine ready to go when the day comes. Unfortunately I'm not really qualified to answer most of your questions but I will follow your progress and hopefully learn a thing or two.

This looks like great fun! Not a lot of time to reply thoroughly but here are some comments:
- wouldn't buy Elwis head gasket. I bought Volvo when I pulled the head
- if you are pulling the head (why?not clear) then replace the valve stem seals with Volvo branded
- why replace the axles? if those are Volvo axles in there now then keep them if you in any way can.
- I always reuse the flex plate and torque converter bolts, save your $ for better gaskets
- yes on the head bolts linked, axle seals linked
- no on the rear main and trans input seals - you must buy these from Volvo.
- I wouldn't touch the front crank seal, leave it
- replace all timing pulleys unless you know their age mileage make
- timing belt buy Conti brand save a few bucks
- timing tensioner are you sure the replacement doesn't have a mechanical style
- don't buy the oil pan kit you linked, because Elring seals can't be trusted. Buy Volvo pickup tube seals (there is a kit) and the sealant.

- unless the turbo has shaft play it doesn't need rebuilding - they are extremely hardy
- get all new turbo coolant hoses, turbo return line seals

It's tempting to buy new CV joints whole.. but it's so much more worth it to keep what you've got and reboot them. If you have original volvo axels, definitly reboot them, theyre incredibly high quality- and even if you don't, do not risk the gamble of buying new ones, theres a 50/50 you'll try installing a poorly machined axel and ruin the teeth of your transmission for the effort!
