1999 V70 XC bad headlight switch?

I don’t know if this problem has been going with my car since I mostly drive during the day, but the headlights and the gauge cluster just died on me. But I noticed if I push down on the headlight switch the lights turn on for a second and then turn off again - I tried turning the car on and off again but no luck. The high beams work when I pull the lever, but turn off when I let go.
How does one diagnose this problem and how much does it cost to fix? Or is it easier to fix it yourself?

You can try a switch from a pick and pull yard or a new one for Eeuro, iPd or FCP here.

- This is safety issue (you can run into no lights at night!).

- I have a HL switch lying around, in very good condition.

- Best is to remove trim panel near the knees (Torx screws). Reach your hand behind the switch and push it out.

- Check the tiny bulbs to be sure they work at night (during the day, cover the switch with your hand and see if the tiny bulbs illuminate).
