the timing was horrid as i was on my way to vacation and couldnt further my dealings, it is still for sale, and im still debating on it. I dont doubt its a good deal in terms of being well maintained, its just my Saab is running well despite needing a few hundred in repairs right now (cv joint and possibly something else)... i need to hash it out a bit more...and see what i can do. ill keep you updated for sure. and no matter what i really appreciate everyones input...it was a great welcome to the forums

seller reached out to me via email after several days while i was away. i looked value up on Edmunds, and even in Excellent condition with the mileage Edmunds gives is a value of 4300 and a DEALER retail of 5600. i re-offered him 4500 with the snows. we will see if he bites.

Im getting the car looked over by a private Volvo mechanic probably next week. His best price is 5k with the Alpins so i will feel better getting it looked over, and for 80 bucks, its money well spent. they will check compression and EVERYTHING even check for repaired body damage and they will know if it was serviced by Volvo dealers or private shops. so if all checks out, ill be good to go. Oh and he was more then willing to let the car get checked.

Thanks for this swm. It's good to know in the future to have this as perhaps a more realistic value to be expected when selling and as a negotiating tool when buying...

Good Luck on the inspection. If they find something there then you may still have something to negotiate with.

There will always be someone wanting a 5-speed so you still can't go too wrong if it checks out... What's $500 if it's something that brings pride, happiness and excitement... :) ?

To me, once they start getting higher mileages, it's 'The More the Merrier' as we see how they hold up against their counterparts... In other words, they can be more enjoyable in the sense that you don't worry about keeping miles off

Inspection went perfect. Car had great compression, all systems checked out good, only issues of note were a hole in one headlight and the e-brake didnt have full tension...THATS IT. the car was tight and in good shape. the mechanic was impressed with its condition and it needed nothing, oh although the cabin filter had never been replaced and it has the original evaporator or whatever part will fail there, gonna change the cabin filter to see if i can prolong its life some.

anyways i bought the car for 5K with brand new 1 season old pilot alpin snow tires. ill throw some pics up or something when i have a chance.

Hey congratulations swm !!!

I went out of town and missed your purchase message there. Did the mechanic tell you what the compression was in real #s?

Also can you tell us what your mechanic charged for the inspection? For someone who doesn't work on their own cars it must be real peace of mind as well to have this done...especially when it comes back with great reviews... :D

the evaluation cost me 80 bucks USD, and yes, it was some piece of mind for the purchase. I have the worksheet at home, i forget the numbers offhand, i think they were all 165 and one dipped to 160, or they were all 155 and one dipped to 150. So far so good with the car. needed two plate bulbs and one fog, and i noticed a left front grill next to the fog light is missing, and the spare is flat, and doesnt look like the original spare. No biggie as i can throw either a summer tire or a snow tire in for the spare if needed.
