I was looking around at XC90 images while prepping a VRD entry (another CN90 killer DIY, this one on XC90 2.5 timing/serpentine belt & water pump) and noticed something on P2 XC90 diesels: the exhaust tips were very nice looking, expensively finished. Then I thought I'd seen them before in real life, even though I've never seen a XC90 D5 (not sold in the US, perhaps not Canada either).
Oh yea. Those exhaust tips were either standard or optional on XC90 V8 models. Probably limited to R Design subflavors.
So yea. This observation courtesy of Too Much Coffee™.

Pretty sure a diesel R-Design in the first photo.
Has Cratus wheels (20 inch) I think but the lower silver runner is the more obvious R-D differentiator.
All sorts of interesting variations were available outside the North American market segment, this apparently being one of them.

Someday someone will have to put together a little history on a few of the back-end 1999-2010 Ford/Volvo business decisions.
Real mixed bag in my opinion, especally as relates to making the normally aspirated 3.2 I6 the only North American powerplant after MY11 while the rest of the world remained with a number of 5 cylinder tubocharged options.
On the other hand, it's hard to imagine Volvo doing a 4.4l V8 in the XC90 (and the S80 no less) on their own so for that I probably ought to be grateful (I own both 2.5T and V8 variants today).
