V70XC Evap Leak - How the hell do I replace this hose?

Post by ecbsykes » Sun Apr 01, 2018 11:13 am

So I think I found the source of my P0442 "Evap Leak (Small)". Cracked hose going to charcoal canister... my only question for anyone who's done this on a 98-2000 V70XC is... how the **** do you get to this thing?

The one side pictured shouldn't be too bad, but the other side seems impossible. If I removed the fuel filter, there's still the big filter bracket in the way and I don't see a way to remove it. I felt one bolt at the top (very difficult to reach) but can't tell if there are more buried back there.

Halp? :(

Look up the forum for L Hose and J Hose replacement. There are several of those with detailed steps. This is the cause of small evap leak code p0442. Good Luck.!

Here is one

Thanks for the reply, but I've done a lot of searching for this topic and I haven't seen any write-ups for this specific model. In fact, only thread mentioning 2000 V70XC evap hoses was my own thread posted in 2011 that went unanswered. Most of the models seem to have all the evap stuff up front near the radiator, or easily accessible in the right rear. The AWD V70XC tends to be a different beast when it comes certain things like this.

Yes , the late 1998 to 2000 use the bastard vacuum controlled evaporative emissions system with the canister in the rear of the car. Except for the purge line, one hard line to the front of the car, all the evap stuff is in one place in the rear, so it I Westerley to deal with once you drop the canister

Yep, you have to remove the fuel filter first. I notice you have no support clamp for your fuel filter which is not a great idea.

Once you remove the fuel filter you can access that pipe. You can also get some access if you open the cover plate for the wiring from above. To get to that you have to remove the panels on the floor in the trunk. Pull out the 2 small side panels either side, then lift out the rear section, and then you have to undo 4 (?) 10mm headed bolts (2 each side) and then the front portion slides out rearwards. There is then a metal cover behind the rear seat on the RHS and remove that. I think that will give you a better view and may give some access from above.

If you can find my thread on replacing the rear sub-frame on my 'R' it may give you some visual help.

Good luck!

Neil.

Well, turns out when you're really determined to find something, you dig around long enough and surprise yourself! I took off a random panel in the rear trunk area, and surprise... It revealed exactly what I needed.

So I'll consider this half-solved. So does anyone know if there's also a J-hose on this car somewhere?

Thanks as always Neil. In that picture, I had already removed the support bracket for my investigating.

Good to know. Let me know if you need any more help on this. Actually the emissions pipe thread gives a better view of that short pipe when the sub-frame was removed. There is one picture that gives a clear view from above the carbon can with the short flattened 'U' pipe that runs from the carbon can to the roll over valve which is the same one that turned out to be split on mine. Volvo if i recall listed 2 different sized clamps for that pipe which is wrong if I recall. you need 2 the same.

That's a pretty excellent and very detailed thread you got there! Can't believe I didn't find that one. So I was able to successfully replace the canister to roll-over valve hose through the top access point (old one pictured below, hoping that was the one and only cause for my CEL code). Looking through your pics, am I safe to assume there is no standard "J-Hose" on this model?

Correct. You only get that on the FWD versions. That is the AWD equivalent. On my V70, the hose from the roll over valve to the filter outlet on the top of the filler pipe was also cracked but it has no play in the AWD other than if you get a fuel leak.

Glad you got it done Ed.
