Re: 2001 V70XC - Switched to Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5W30
One of my trusted internet myth sources (which I cannot reveal) just confirmed that the M1 and Penn won't mix at all, they will stay separate like mercury in water

At the recent oil & filter change, the action of pulling up dipstick was free of any resistance. The two o'ring were dried and cracked so replaced both with Volvo's.
It now takes some effort and seals better. What to expect, change in crankcase pressure etc?

Yes - only if you have a very neglected PCV system (which I doubt).
You could as well do the Rubber Glove Test and prove me right (or wrong) at any time

Abscate was adding his special humor to the conversation! Once a year oil changes are crazy in my opinion in a old engine no matter what oil.
I use Redline 10W30 in my 2004 S80 T6 which is a group 5 oil, but a estar based product. Even though Ester is supposed to be the most stable base available I certainly won't leave the oil beyond the 6 months Volvo recommends and never the 7500 miles per Volvo either. It seems to me my 14 year old engine has to be allowing more contaminants past the rings polluting the oil than when new. June

The six months is to accommodate the use of mineral oils though. It's never been shorter than a year since at least the 80s over here. A lot depends on driving patterns as well though.

Agree, 6 months is rather for mineral, a good synthetic should last a decent 12 months and/or 7000 miles in a region with mild climate given the engine runs in good condition.
But the best really is to send an oil sample (for ex to https://www.blackstone-labs.com/ - p.s. I don't work for them). This should put an end to any doubts.
As June said, engine condition is critical for engine oil life. A more or less good working PCV system may cause oil contamination, not to mention a less optimal injector spray pattern (incomplete gas/air mixture combustion), stuck piston rings, clogged VVT solenoids, plenty of things that may cause the engine oil to get contaminated.

The purpose of the oil is to get contaminated so that nothing else is
I still don't get oil analysis though. All it seems to tell you is whether you've gotten the engine warm enough to boil moisture and fuel away and if you've got a coolant leak. Both quite easy to tell if you're the one driving the car yourself regularly.
