Looking for a diesel now. need some general info

Post by kaneelschep »

Hi all.

The benzine t5 is sadly gone. it hurt a lot, but in the end I just had no way to bring it or fix it in time for our move abroad.
The audi a4 tdi I drive now is awesome at mileage, though terrible at comfort and size. Plus the forum support is basicly non existent.

So I would really like all that back! ;) In the form of a diesel 850 or v70.
Is there any difference between the diesel 850/v70's? Maybe they changed some little things for good or worse towards the end of its life in 2000?
Or are all they all completely the same?
I know this is mainly about the benzine cars here, but I just thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

Get a P2 with the Volvo 5 cylinder diesel instead. The P80s use a diesel from Audi. At least the earlier models. Not that it's bad it's just not as powerful.

The reason you don't get diesels is you have stricter rules on harmful emissions. Our rules are more concerned with climate emissions.

850 and s,v70 up to p2 models use 5 cyl diesel engine from Audi 100 c4 and their early A6 up to 1997.
From 2000 and on...on p2 models...Volvo developed it's own D5 5cyl engine,but still they used both...Audi's TDI and Volvo's D5.
Diesels(TDI) engines used in p80 are all the same...the difference between 850 and s,v70 up to 2000 is in engine management only...MSA 15.7 vs MSA 15.8 version.
About power of tdi engine in Volvo p80....it have 103kw(140hp) it's not underpowered at all since it's turbo diesel engine.

Make that a trip to Budapest! ;) I left the rainy country for my wife's sunny country :)
Guess I should change my avatar flag now.

Diesel is good! Nice and cheap :) Nice high torque in low revs. Always ready to jump. as opposed to the T5 which only jumps if in correct revrange and gear. 300nm in the Volvo diesel must do something, no? :)

I do a steady 45mpg in city traffic with the audi b5. Easy over 50mpg on highway at 60 mph. I expect a Volvo 850/v70 diesel can do about 30 to 40mpg. Depending on the good old foot. Good enough for me.

I don't really like the p2' s looks ;) So no.
And I do kinda like the van engine. :) A friend of mine just put this audi c4 5cilinder engine in a vw transporter and added a bigger turbo. It makes about 200hp now. Together with the long gearing makes that transporter very pleasant on the highway.

I read somewhere the classic v70 got a smaller turbo on the diesel engine along its life. but I don't know when or if its true.

Ah Misha wrote faster than me.
So no difference in engine on p80s.

Good, Then I can just look at all of which are available!

When I lived in the UK I almost bought a new 98 V70 D5 with an auto transmission. That was a fairly quick car and had a UK listed 45 mpg. The car drove very well and it was very well matched gear ratios with the auto to the engine torque curve. Only reason I didn't buy it is there was a bright red T5 V70 manual trans that was one year old and almost half price at the same dealer.

Gas at 40 Euro cents per liter helps, too!

General Motors destroyed the perception of diesels in the USA with a horrible line up of diesel cars in the 1980s..I can't believe a diesel at 40 mpg is putting out more emissions than a gas car at 20 mpg or worse in the city

98 V70 D5 didn't exist. P1 V70 only came with TDI, no D5 there.
