I will start by saying I am not familiar with this propshaft. That said - I understand how most of them are assembled.
It looks like the solution is on the other side of the carrier bearing. Can you provide a picture of this? Your picture as a reference, the carrier bearing will be removed by pulling towards the top. I assume some sort of U-Joint is there and its removal is the key to your rebuild. I would guess that weld is used to hold in place a sleeve that remains in the tube. I readily admit I may be wrong.

Normally the ujoint would slide out of of that welded slip joint. So yes that weld is being used to hold in place. I'll try to get better pics and post asap.
