2004 volvo s80 2.5t AWD transmission service required

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 volvo s80 2.5t AWD transmission service required

Just picked up a 2004 s80 AWD with the 2.5t. I was not able to properly test drive it so I don't know if there is a actual problem with it. I know I should have driven it but for the price, it was a steal even with a Bad transmission. Paid $600 for it and figured I can get double that money even if I part it out.

First plan is to try to fix it since the rest of the car is mint condition. Being that this is a 2.5t and not k own for transmission issues, is there something else that goes wrong on these to cause the error light? The airbag light is also on (not too worried about it) but besides that it does go into drive and reverse.

My initially I will try flushing the old fluid out and resetting the codes with my friend's Vida.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You don't say how the transmission works through the gears. Service message might mean it has a mechanical issue, but might mean as simple as the fluid is worn, because the fluid wears when overheated. I'd check first there in no transmission fluid leak at the radiator into the coolant, then do a transmission fluid change in several steps at 1-2 weeks interval perhaps trying not to drive the car for long distances.

The case was that it was raining hard here and taking the car for a test drive without plates was an issue. I had to decide on the spot keeping into consideration that the car is clean, clean title, and for the price I probably won't find a 2.5t s80. worst case I fix it on my own over the winter or part it out.I will be bringing it home tomorrow night. I will take it for a spin tomorrow night and see what it does.

I do have a 04 xc90 2.5t as well as a dozen volvo's in the past so I have experience working on them. Never had one with transmission message though.

Thanks for the reply Oragex . That will be my first action plan. I will report back my findings

Brought the car home tonight . Car drive very well. Thankfully so far so signs of any issue with shifting neither in upshift or downshift. Car has plenty of power .

The only issue I noticed so far not transmission related is that the steering has tight spots in it. I have a feeling it's the u joint that is somewhat seized. Will look into that. The car tracks straight and no noticeable pull when braking.

I will be changing the transmission fluid out soon and will erase the codes and hopefully that takes care of the transmission error message.

So I had time to check into the codes and here is what I got.

P0700
P0740 torque convertor clutch solenoid circuit.

The fluid was pretty dark so before I drive it again I will drain and fill the fluid and hope that it takes care of the issue.

My friend with Vida was able to clear the Airbag light that was on. Not sure why it was on .

I will keep updating as I go

I have a 2005 with tranny problems at 157k and I was told not to change the fluid at that point because it may make matters worse. That is because the new fluid has a detergent in it that will wash out the valves and make them nearly impossible to seal when in use. Yes, the gunk currently there helps them seal.
My Tranny problems signal the end of this car. At first it was jerky downshifting when approaching a red light for example. But now there is a delay sometimes so that when the light turns green I step on the gas and the car just sits there and reves up until suddenly with a thunk and jerk, the tranny engages although the shift handle was in "D" the whole time. This problem was lessened when i cleaned out the throttle body which produced an idle so weak that it failed to power the tran. completely.
I pulled the dipstick out of the tran and smell the fluid and if it smells burnt,( it did ) that is a bad sign. I don't judge color because the pink is a dye anyway. But call a tran service place and ask them about a flush for a high mileage vehicle. The three I called in Arizona all said the same thing, they don't recommend it. So I drive the thing knowing that this is the end of it as getting a rebuilt tran from Mexico or something is pretty tough to find for a Volvo. So far I haven't been able to find one
