850 CD changer won't work

Post by Nico99 »

Hi
I recently bought a 1995 850 with an alpine CD changer mounted on the glove box. Problem is I can't select the CD function on the head unit
Is this a common issue on this model ?
Please leave any suggestions
Thanks
Nico

Have you checked the cable is fully home in the back of the head unit and the CD changer?

Not normally an issue. Does your head unit have a single CD changer built into it also?

Hi Neil
Yes I've doubled checked the cable and my head unit has a built-in cassette player

Do you have an owners handbook for your car that describes that model of radio? If not I'll go look to see if I have one for an 850 in the box of manuals I have in the basement to see if there are any 'tricks' we should know about to getting it to work.

Did the car come with the CD multi-changer or did you retro-fit it? Should have asked what model the changer is as well. If it is a later unit than the original radio head unit it may not be compatible.

I don't have any owner's manual, the previous owner lost them
The CD changer is original, and is loading and ejecting the CD deck, so there should be no problems.

Is it possible the one installed (aftermarket?) operates as a tune-able FM station?

Wize I don't think it's an aftermarket changer, it's a alpine changer mounted on the glove box connected directly to the head unit by wire and there are no signs of it being replaced .
Anyways I'll test the FM frequencies
Thanks

Yeah, eject all the discs and then listen for a quiet channel. If it is an aftermarket hooked up this way, you should have an FM channel with no noise, no hiss, nada while it is turned on.

If it is a factory radio, you will have DIN connectors running off of it (unless I'm mistaken...) similar to "ancient" keyboards
