I just have one spare for five cars and we flip a coin to see who gets it this week.

That’s a whole set of tires I don’t have to buy. Rub them down with used motor oil to keep them soft.

I hear Teflon works rather well with front motorcycle tires =p

It’s a defective tire, not an end of life.

Check your Tp on your spare and if you have to use it for any distance, put it on the rear.

- I agree with the comments on full-size as a spare. Donuts are OK but dangerous at high speed, this is why the owners manual clearly states that "when using spare tire, drive at slower speed". But I don't recall the "exact max speed" with donuts.

- Also, who would remember that one is driving with a compact and needs to control the speed (let's say at 50 mph).

- I have seen a person who mounted a donut in the rear of the car, swerved around another car in front and spun out of control.

- Anyway, the compact donuts are dangerous, and were born out of greed (company tries to save money).

850Rs came with a 17" Volan in the trunk. I'm guessing T5-Rs came with a fifth Titan as well. My 850R still has a 205/45 Kumho Ecsta from 2004 on the fifth volan in the trunk. 280 treadwear, a previous owner must have liked his grip...

I totally agree. The problem is the donut spare is dangerous, it is not a "good spare." Get a 15 inch wheel and tire, it will be cheaper *and* safer to refresh that than to refresh a donut.

This is what I do with all my cars. If I can fit a full size where a donut fits, I'll hit a junkyard and pull a full size. There's one near my FIL that doesn't pull the tires, so you can find Volvo rims and tires on old 850s and V70s. $20. If the tire is in good shape and not too old, bam, you're done. If it is and you need to replace it, a good used tire runs $20 in his area. So for less than $50 (the cost of a new donut), I can have a full size spare in any car.

I've been looking in salvage yards for a year now to get some Volvo rims. Either someone beats me to it for some steelies, or when I find some alloys, the yard charges an exorbitant amount. $100+ for one beat up alloy, give me a break. Wouldn't even pay $50 for an alloy that hasn't been confirmed to still be in round.

I agree, donuts are dangerous for any driving over 35mph. I prefer full sized spare for safety and longevity. If FWD you can run on the spare "indefinitely" which is good if you can't immediately get a new tire, say you're on a cross country road trip.

Last I checked my donut, it was stamped with a production date of 1996. It looks okay, but I really don't want to have to depend on it.

Ha ha, had to laugh when i read that post.

So i guess that is a lot of coin flipping? Once isnt enough for five possibilities
Throw a die maybe? Then there's one left, the sixth, so that NOBODY gets it that week (ha ha).

I've got the compact spare and I've even checked the pressure once since I bought the car. My first line of defense is spare tyre in a can and a 12v mini compressor. Hopefully that'll do it long enough to never have to get the spare out
