Replaced motor, now acts likes its seized.

Post by Ludermilch »

Hi all,

Had to replace the motor in my C70. I tested the motor for compression by turning it over using a starter connected to a manual transmission. All checked out. Reconnected the torque converter then the automatic transmission and installed it into the engine bay. After connecting the hoses and wires, I replaced fluids, added a battery and tried to start it.

Engine did not crank after several attempts.
Terminals of battery cables were warm.
None of the accessories are seized.
Turning over manually with crank pulley nut does not budge in either direction. Acts Seized?!

What am I missing?

Thank you for all suggestions.

Have you checked the timing belt is aligned and has not slipped so you are hitting valves?

sounds like the torque converter is mis-positioned and jammed up against the transmission pump.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

This is what I fear and what is likely the problem. I did not test the motor after the automatic was connected. Thinking that I'll drop the subframe to one side to unbolt the transmission and try again.

Neil.
Thanks Neil, I don't believe this is the issue because there is no play in the crank at all. But if this turns out to be the solution I'll let you know.

After working the transmission away from the block, I turned the motor crank and all was well. I then slowly worked the transmission back into place while turning the motor crank till it mated together without issue. This solved the issue of my engine not cranking. Now on to finding the no start issue!!
