So I bought a couple of nice stock RSE (rear seat entertainment) headrests with monitors from 2007 XC70 and put them into my 2005 XC70. I don't have the rest of RSE system, but have Kenwood 2DIN head unit with RCA video output. The monitors didn't turn on on their own, they are controlled by the DVD player via separate per-monitor CAN-bus'es. I had to buy Arduino Due + dual CAN-bus shield, DVD player from 2008 XC90 to snoop CAN traffic and implement it in Arduino. Here you go, kids are absolutely quiet for at least first hour or two of a long ride
Picture is excellent, cheap infraread headphones work too.
I am running into trouble with our RSE in our XC90 (2007). I came across this thread and was wondering, can you help me out on how to get started to change the original dvd player with something else like you did?
You need any Arduino with 2 CAN-bus shields. Plus a source of video: whether head unit replaced, or some standalone video player. The only hint is that player should have a decent analog part, since the headrest monitors are analog. For example, cheap $25 players on ebay/Amazon are awesome with HDMI source, however its composite signal is complete cr*p. You may have better luck converting HDMI signal to composite with a converter.
