In 1980 that would have likely thrown most mechanics into a tizzy.
That was humor...and most likely was symbolic of what is required today.

In 1979, Bosch's L-Jetronic EFI on a 1978 DATSUN 280Z did bamboozle several Colorado shops, and Datsun's Denver tech rep had to solve the mystery.

Vehicle would start up, when cold, just fine. As it warmed up, it was being choked, so driver had to increase RPMs to kept it from stalling. End of story, EFI's temp sensor was defective...giving engine cold response. I suspect tech rep was aware of this issue, cause he knew right away what the issue was.

Well it happened to me! My car is still in the shop and I have a loaner 2018 XC90 T6. All the traffic was stopped on the interstate for a major car accident. I was stopped with my elderly father in the passenger seat. When suddenly the collision warning sounded! I looked up to see a extremely fast approaching blur barrelling down on me. Nothing I could do, nor any time to do anything. Accidents happen just that fast. Then the Dodge that hit me was hit by a Jeep, than the Jeep was hit by a Park Avenue

Luckily I follow my own advice and only roll in a Volvo! The WIPPS system is amazing! This is my first experience being rear ended in a wipps car. Father said "I felt nothing but a slight bump". Absolutely I only felt a slight bump, but heard a big bang! Had I not been in a WIPPS equipped Volvo we would be hurt.

The truck that hit us was a 2002 Dodge Durango which was so badly damaged it could not be driven away. The radiator was smashed into the engine and the frame bent at the wheels causing the wheels to be crooked. The XC90 completely held its integrity. Just look at the pictures. A big thank you to God and Volvo! June

Well it happened to me!
In mid sixties, my brother had a 1964 Volvo 544 B18 Sport, and was waiting at railroad tracks in Wichita, KS. He looked in rear-view mirror and saw a fast moving vehicle approaching, and he fully applied brake pedal, which prevented him from slamming into train. Rear end totaled.

One interesting thing, the wheels locked bracing for impact automatically. Apparently when these new Volvos detects a rear end collision is imminent the car prepares the occupants and the car for impact. The Scandinavians have got things worked down to a science. June

Glad you were ok June-bug. I’ve been rolling my Volvo’s hard from DC to BOSTON and it sure feels good having all that steel around , and all that safety’s engineering.

Any time I come up on stopped traffic like that I get apprehensive that someone behind might not be paying attention. This (60-70mph flow comes up to abruptly stopped traffic) happens too often driving Chicago expressways in to/out of the downtown area. My previous car the center stop lamp was small, not as bright, lower on the trunk lid, and sort of inadequate. I haven't been scared by people from behind not appearing to notice I hit the brakes in the S60 nearly as often as in that previous car. There was one time a car that came to a stop behind me- I could see in the rearview the driver pointing at my center high stop lamp, practically could read lips of the guy talking to a front seat passenger "It's not down, but up there big and bright at eye level where it should be".

Can't have been fun just watching the acc it happen to you in the rear view, glad you're OK and also that it happened in the loaner so that your own car is a still OK ;-)

In Germany people habitually turn on the emergency warning lights when braking or stopping suddenly on the highway. It's spreading here too now. Newer European cars also do it themselves if you really slam the brakes. To give an extra signal to those behind that they really do need ro brake.

Ok it has been over two days now and neither dad or I have even a twinge of pain! WIPPS did its job well! I wish I had been able to get better pictures of gust how warped the Dodge was. I feel horrible giving Volvo back their car damaged. I am so happy having my baby home! June
