Some of them have them, some of them don't. I think it's just a vibration damper. As long as the splines into the transmission are correct, it will work. Finding the correct axles for 2000s can be a pain, especially with an XC like me. A lot of stores and websites will show "compatible" products that are then noted as not compatible in the fine print.

I just replaced an axle with one that doesn't have the weight. No difference in driving noted.

Some axles have a metal balance weight in place of the rubber part shown in the photo above. I had that on my 1998 V70XC.

I can't figure out what Volvo was doing with the variations. Must be they got vibration issues with some set ups like AWD and turbos and not so much with NA's. I have just sold a 2000 V70 NA and it did not have that, but then it also had a 5 speed auto trans.

If I read it right, you are in CA. Try calling vandsautodismantlers in Sacramento area and see if they have a good axle for you. If not also try Chapman motors on Vancouver island on West Coast Canada, or Erie Vo-Vo on East coast. They have a lifetime warranty on their used Volvo parts. Try to stick with a Good used Volvo part over a bad aftermarket part.

What is wrong with your current axle? Is it an aftermarket replacement or the original Volvo one. Volvo axles are pretty tough. If a CV boot has failed recently on it it may be able to get it repaired. It is not too hard.
