I just did a ATF flush and fill with some Red Line fluid. While I was in there I replaced the top and bottom torque mounts with IPD urethane units. The old units were shot. Now at load, the car drives just great. It shifts smoothly.
However at idle if feels like we are attempting atmospheric re-entry. I am surprised that every interior panel does not shake off.
Question 1: Should I get the three motor mounts and replace them? Are the Hutchinson units from IPD and FCP good? Is there something better? Should I replace their bolts too, or re-use the ones there. If I should replace them, where can I get the specifications to order replacements with the mounts so the car is not out of commission.
Question 2: Are there ways to reduce vibration at idle? There are not codes. I do not think I have a vacuum leak.
Question 3: What about the sub-frame bushings? Has anyone used the IPD urethane inserts to refresh them? Should I replace the whole unit?
Question 4: What am I missing?
Thanks,
Cedric

Hey there... the men at the Volvo have always warned me about replacing all the mounts with poly... you should really only replace with a good aftermarket style motor mounts...i am replacing all the lowers with lemforder unless you're racing
The other thing is to re-use the factory bolts as much as possible and I would 'clean' throttle plate assy which requires removal. #1 disconnect negative terminal on battery first then the piping it's a lot easier if you remove fan and shrowd Assy you've got more room to move...4 bolts to module on engine and unplug... clean or replace... maybe

The issue will be the poly mounts. They do warn they will transmit more/all vibration through the car relative to rubber mounts. That may be fine for the race track or someone who is nuts, but rubber mounts only for me unless there is no other option available.
I have used Hutchison and Lemforder with no real issues. Some say Hutchison is the supplier for Volvo P2 mounts, but not been able to confirm that. Either way, go back to rubber mounts if you like to keep the filling intact!
Neil.

I have decided that what I have really done is uncover the source of my original concern. I decided to flush out the ATF because of some vibration at idle, that and the age and mileage of the car. I believe that the root cause of my issues will turn out to be the three motor mounts. I mostly suspect the front and rear units, not the side. A set of EPDM mounts are on their way from FCP.
The vibration should be dispersed by the weight of the engine onto the sub-frame, that it is not tells me that the elasticity of those mounts is practically non-existent. I don't think the urethane in the torque bushing should have that much vibration to transmit in the first place. The thread will be updated when I get the new mounts installed.

The lower actual engine mounts are very durable on these engines and very unlikely to cause vibrations. I'm yet to hear of one of the gasoline engines about failed lower mount that caused vibrations. The story is totally different on the european (and other markets) diesel D5 engine that has lower vacuum mounts.
I'm going to say the same about the poly mounts, not a good idea, same for using cheap mounts - to be avoided. I've also heard of Hutchinson to be one of the providers for Volvo.
Keep us updated

I had upper and torque poly mounts and vibration was horrible and I didn't notice any improvement over good condition rubber mounts. Replace them with rubber mounts purchased at FCPEuro and when they good bad, replace them under the FCP lifetime warranty.

I went through this too. Just replacing the lower mount with poly resulted in an objectionable amount of vibration at idle. I can't imagine what it must feel like when you use poly for the top one also.

Just a side note, only my opinion but the lower torque in poly is useless and needless. Ipd is marketing it nicely as a real upgrade (even more so, they seem to let us believe that this will help with the transmission shifting) but I think it's more a fancy upgrade. If the transmission doesn't shift well it's because of the main solenoids/valve body. Plus, the standard rubber lower torque mount is perfectly fine, can't see how using poly instead of rubber would change anything in shifting.
Note to mention the Ipd poly one is twice the price or the genuine mount. I'd say pure marketing based on the hope it will improve the widespread transmission shifting problems.

Upper poly mount is likely the main culprit, switch that one out to a quality rubber mount and you will be much happier. Switch them both to return to normalcy.
