Volvo 245 D24 won't start after new air filter

Post by Diirko »

Hi guys

I have to go to the "check station" here in Belgium next week, so I've been doing some maintenance on the car. Not much was needed, save for some rubbers that had gone bad, a spring that needed some welding cause I couldn't find a diesel spring anywhere!, a new fuse for the right parking lights and a new turn signal relay, but what can you expect from a 26 year old car with 200.000 miles on it.

Anyway, to up my chances of passing the smog test I decided to replace the air filter as a precaution. Seemed routinely enough for anyone to do... except now my car doesn't start? The starter motor works just fine, but the car doesn't seem to "want to start". My brother also reported seeing white smoke coming out of the exhaust when I tried to start her up.
I only tried three times before concluding I would sleep on it as it had been a long day already.

To make things a bit more clear, I did remove the entire airbox up until the "air manifold" (if that's what it's called?). So basically all the rubber/ plastic bits and pieces cause it needed some cleaning.
For the life of me, I could not make up what this extra hose going in to the engine is there for? I clipped the hose loose from the airbox, but left it on the engine.

I hope someone can help me out with this, cause I have no idea where I went wrong

Did you unhook anything else? It's a VW/Audi diesel, it should start even if the entire air filter and air box is removed. Diesel doesn't have vacuum.

Turned out to be the fuse for the preheater (nr.5?).
It was really thin at the tip and probably broke after I reseated all the fuses. Explains why I could still start up fine before removing the air filter; the engine was still plenty warm so the preheating wasn't necessary.
Thank God it was something this easy :D
