Loosing My Mind Over An AXLE!

Post by ProStreetDriver »

So I'm in need of an axle for my C30... Boot ripped when the previous owner had it, I guess they let it go to far and now I need a new axle. My car is an 07 C30, T5, with a manual and for whatever reason I can't find a GKN manual axle. I called the dealer this morning and they checked both for automatic and manual is different part numbers. I am finding that other models of Volvos are interchangeable between the different transmissions. According to the Volvo parts site, it doesn't seem to separate between an auto or manual https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/prod ... 00555.html

Can I use an automatic axle and is there really any difference? I need boots for the other side, I can see they're just starting to crack but not through yet. Not sure if I'll have the same problem or not.

Is gkn as good as original Volvo? I need a new driver's side for my C70 and sofar my best result on another Volvo has been with an original Volvo driveshaft. Expensive but good.

GKN is the OEM supplier for Volvo. From what I'm finding, it's about half price and it's the same quality.

So I'm thinking out loud here, I found their pdf parts catalogue for both axles and parts from GKN. They don't list joints specifically for the C30/C70/S40/V50 models, but they do list the axle itself and boot kits. All share the same part numbers regardless of the transmission type and most engines appear to be the same too. For the C30 specifically they don't list too much, but on the other models they share the same axles and it shows for manual and auto being the same parts. Page 1936 http://www.gknservice.com/fileadmin/use ... bro_GB.pdf This is for the axle assemblies specifically.

Looking over on the Volvo parts site, comparing other components like wheel bearings, control arms, front subframe, manual transmission, and seals, most models appear to share all the same part numbers too.

I got for my S40 what was supposed to be a GKN from Autozone...if came in and it wasn't. Looked well enough built (probably Chinese though) so I went with it...that was last summer. Haven't had a problem although I don't see that it will last like the original. I still have what came out of the car...will look for a rebuilder at some point so when I need another one (passenger - L front), I'll put the original back in. The main thing is not to give up your original as a "core." when you do get an axle. Most want yours as a swap and then still charge you an outrageous amount. I think mine was right around $150.
