'02 2.9 - Rough Acceleration, Exhaust Noise, P0011 & P0016 codes

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

'02 2.9 - Rough Acceleration, Exhaust Noise, P0011 & P0016 codes

Post by ashly.ydr »

Hey, everyone! I've had a pretty rough issue come up on my 2002 S80 2.9 today. Was taking a usual drive, nothing out of the ordinary, and began experiencing loud exhaust-like noises upon acceleration. The acceleration became slow and unsteady. Some rumble and hum at idle. Also, a slight "jump", for lack of better word, while maintaining an even 48/50 mph.

My husband read a P0011 code on the first reading, and now it continually reads a P0016 code, both relating to the cam. Also, the timing belt was replaced just about 30,000 miles ago.

We're really at a loss here, and appreciate any help! We're currently most interested in what the correlation between this loud, exhaust-like sound and the cam codes are. My husband generally does my repairs, so this vehicle is frequently maintained.

Thanks in advance!

It is issues with the Variable Valve Timing (VVT)

Three things that can cause both codes are:
  • Low oil pressure
    Poor oil quality
    Defective reset valve
You might start with an oil and filter change. Use a good grade of oil and a quality filter.

Probably nothing, but the exhaust-like noise would have me checking all the air ducts (assuming you have a turbo engine) involved in the turbo system. I had a v6 turbo once pop an air intake hose, and that resulted in the noise you describe. Good luck with the repair.
