'95 850 No power

Post by Kuhnboy »

Hello all, I recently bought my first Volvo. It's a 1995 850 turbo sedan and I'm having a hard time figuring this out. It will run and rev fine in park and neutral, but won't have any power when I give it more than like 1/10th throttle. It's showing boost on the gauge, it has a new fuel pump and filter, and new cat. I've heard it could be the old cat blew out and clogged the muffler, it might have low fuel pressure, and the wastegate might have a problem. It sounds great when it's just idling or in park, but won't accelerate above thirty mph on its own. Any help or tips on where to start would be amazing. Thank you in advance.

I takes about 1/2 HP to rev an engine and make it sound fine.

Extracting the 200 HP you need to get your car and up and going is a different beast.

test your fuel pressure at the rail on start and revving

New cap rotor plugs wires coil?

compression test is final answer.

Oh yeah -if you get boost when you rev at idle, something is wrong. How much are you seeing - or are you using the gauge installed by marketing ??

It's showing boost when driving, I'm thinking now that it's the tps. I don't know if the last owner replaced any ignition parts. I'm going to be testing the fuel pressure later, if I can scan it and the tps isn't working how it should

Just got a hold of a fuel pressure gauge and it's reading nineteen when running... The PO gave me receipts with the car, including one for a fuel pump and filter two months ago. Could this be the regulator?

You need 43.5psi at first prime before starting the engine.
At idle you must have around 35psi.
And again...at full throttle at high rpm you need 43.5psi.
19psi is too low even at idle.

19 is all it will get and when it's not running it will immediately drop to 10 psi. Any ideas on what this could be?

I'm not sure on the brand, it was 165.00$ for just the pump. Will it say in a place I can see without dropping the tank?

where was the pump purchased? vendor x price may reveal brand. otherwise it would be on the side of the pump motor (in the tank)
you should have access to the pump via an inside access panel.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I could contact the shop that replaced it, as I said it was the PO that had it replaced.
