Air conditioner not taking charge

Post by Oitsujosh »

Good morning all MVS folks,
This issue has be a bit stumped. The a/c I'm my xc70 worked all last summer. I did have to put a charge in it about 20 months ago shortly after I got it. It took the 134a no problem. It wasn't working this spring when I went to turn it on. I figured it wss low again so I bought a can and went to charge it. I hooked it up and put everything on max like I did before, the compressor didn't engage. So i jumped the low pressure switch and it The compressor kicked right in. Now the conundrum, I let it run like that for about 5 min but it doesn't seem like it's actually taking anything. The gauge was showing less than 10psi while the compressor in running then the can of refrigerant doesn't feel like anything has been taken from it. Before I went looking to see if there may be a clogged line anywhere and open the system didn't know if there was anything else I should look for that could cause this. The climate control doesn't flash any errors when I start the car either.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

I've never had one do that unless the refrigerant valve is somehow clogged up. I assume you are using the type that pierces the can so you might want to try running the valve in and then back out again.

If you open the valve do you get the refrigerant to flow when it isn't hooked up to the port?

Lee, yes it is that type I'm using . I did try closing and opening the valve again to no avail. When last time I used it, it didn't need the whole can. I was surprised that when I removed the hose from the port that it didn't leak even though I forgot to close the valve at the can. I figured the connecter had a valve in it. Maybe I'll try a new can and fill hose and see how that goes.

Well this looks line a case of read the directions. Upon closer look at the can of refrigerant, the one i bought is for a newer Epa approved fill hose. The top of this can seems to have a secondary valve under the top seal, so a heads up for those of us using older equipment. Thanks for the input and I'll update once I've gotten another can. :)
