2000 C70 shuddering / vibrating upon acceleration

Post by SoDoWarts »

Out of the blue my car started shuddering, but only when while accelerating up to about 40mph. The car has 140,000 miles on it and the tires have about 10k on them. There's no vibrating when going down hill or my foot off the accelerator. When it's still I feel a slight shudder but it's not there when I put it in neutral. About 3 weeks later it seems to be doing it a bit as I go up toward 60mph. I can't ignore it any more -- it's not going to go away. Any info would be appreciated! Thank you!

Typically motor mounts. Have someone hold the brakes and touch the gas pedal in drive as you watch the engine.

There's a good chance it could be your CV axle(s). 140k is pretty early for CV axles, but your description sounds to me like axles.
Manually put your car in different gears at the speeds you mentioned the shuddering. If the resonance/pitch of the shuddering/vibrations changes dependent on which gear your in (engine rpm) it could be motor mounts. If it does not change based on gear selection (engine rpm) but changes with road speed only it's probably your CV axle(s).

As Pete suggests, check the engine mounts. Check the top torque mount for cracks and splits, and then if you have access to a floor jack, remove the passenger front wheel and carefully jack the oil pan on the passenger side and look for separation between the rubber position attache the near the crank pulley and the metal part bolted to the sub-frame in front of the crank pulley.

If they are both fine, have the rear parking brake shoes checked for separation of the shoe material and the metal portion.

If all those are good, look at the lower torque mount rear bush and then the CV axles for play.

Neil.
