1995 850 - Odometer Not working

Post by DwainM11 »

Hello!

so, this all started when my speedometer quit working a while back. Found one on EBAY, replaced, speedometer working again. in the process of replacing the speedometer I reused my old odometer. Winter came and the project lagged. I need to work on the dash cover and things piled up, you know how it goes...

so I started driving it again recently and noticed that the odometer isn't working. Here are the details:
VDO Cluster
speedometer works
ABS light OK when starting car
ABS light not on
disassembled instrument cluster again: gears OK
checked ohms on the stepper motor connector: two readings of ~80 ohms, one reading of 160 ohms. one pin not connected, this appears to be what I should expect from a good motor.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

The small white gear is ok?

Probably a bad wire in the harness at the top of the cluster. I had to repair 4 of mine.

There are two versions of the odometer and I'm not sure which version is used on a '95. On the early version the stepper motor for the odometer has a pigtail that plugs into a socket on the cluster main board. That version is fairly foolproof so long as the wires get plugged in. On the later version the stepper motor has a daughter board and there are pins that extend up from the cluster motherboard and plug into sockets that are integrated into the odometer daughter board.

I have had some trouble with the later type not working reliably unless you give the pins a spray with contact cleaner and "firmly" press the daughter board on when reassembling the cluster.

The pre '96 cars use one and the post '96 cars use another.

I drove around for about 2 weeks with my dash pad off chasing my broken wires.
