Front Suspension - Spring noise - 2001 V70 2.4T

Post by Harleyvh »

Car: 2001 V70 2.4 T

Lower A-arms, front end links and front upper strut mounts have been changed in May 2007.

I'm hearing a "spring noise" (the noise is like the "spring noise" when one jumps on a bed) from the front end on the passenger side when the car goes in a depression or tight left hand turn (when the pressure is on the right front suspension).

What is it?

thanks

Could be a worn out spring or spring is not in the spring seat properly or the spring seat is worn out. Of course, I may be wrong and it be something else...but I think it's probably one of these things.

Could you squirt some oil in the seat? It would offer a quieting effect until it leaks down the McPherson. If it worked then grease the end of the spring. W40 the upper end to see if the squeek is from there.

Earlier today, I checked the upper strut bushing and they seem ok.
(no crack or damage as last may b4 the replacement)
I also checked the front tire for uneven wear and it seems ok too.

I just sprayed some Jig-a-loo lub on the top bushings.
I'll see what happpen tomorrow during the drive.

Regarding greasing the spring seat from underneat, luckilly, I'm in the process of upgrading the front brakes to 305mm (hopefully next week) so I'll be able to have a better look when the car is up.
In the meantime, I'll have to go easy on the car.

I was planning a Koni FSD / Eibach sprint kit upgrade next spring... I may have to do it a little earlier.

Will keep you posted

Yes my 2003 D5 V70 does that, its driving me bonkers, of course you have to drive the thing to hear it. And at a stop it doesn't do it.

Keep it coming and let us know if you find the bloody thing.

Update (Part Deux)

The Jig-a-loo spraying had no effect. Noise still there.
I'll have to check in my "testing curve" tomorrow to see if it's been less loud.

Will keep you posted.

Nothing to do with the anti roll bar or around that area is it, it sounds almost like a dry bush on mine and has a spring damper noise "fall off" in noise after a bump in the road. Like you expect from a damped second order differential equation.

Next weekend, I'll have the car on stand as I have to change the oil so I'll be able to better check the area (anti-roll bar / bushing / endlink)

I'll be able to see if the spring is not aligned properly or if there any visible damages. I'll take a couple of pcitures if this can help.

I feel for you. My 2001 V70 has been making that noise on and off for 5 years now. It's a real bear to track down. I think it might be a combination of a worn spring seat and/ or strut bearing. When I had all those replaced, and upgraded my Swaybar endlinks to QuickBrick Extreme, the noise finally went away. I would go ahead with your spring/strut replacement a little early, and replace the seats and bearings that they touch at the same time. I think the Stock Volvo suspension just has a few very weak links in an overall great package. Even with only 15" wheels and tires and no rear anti-sway bar, mine still handles great.

Well did the oil change last weekend
Took a couple of pictures.
Struts are not leaking.
Sprayed the end links and torsion bar bushing with WD40.

Result: The noise is still present.

I posted the pictures here:
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.ph ... &album=358

Both sides look the same to me.....
Feel free to comment if you see anything..

Next step:
I'm replacing the brakes/pads so I'll have my mechanic take a look at it.
