1987 245 spark no fuel

Post by rainbowwillow63 »

My friend has a 1987 245 DL. It has spark but no fuel coming to it.He says it's the ECU but if that were true it would not have spark, right? I'm thinking maybe fuel relay or pump. He has no idea how to use OBD and even with me guiding him he can't do it  . Can I get some ideas from you guys?

He could be right, on the '87 245 the ignition and fuel are controlled by two different control modules.
Even on a car with one control module controlling both ignition and fuel , one can have ignition but not fuel. Control modules are microcomputers, one section can go bad and the other section(s) can be just fine.

Does he have Jetronics 2.2 or 2.3?

There may be nothing wrong with the Jetronics fuel injection system. It may not be getting fuel delivered to the fuel rail. Fuel pump, clogged fuel filter ect.

On a car that old, I would be going through the wiring of the Jetronics fuel injection system with a fine tooth comb, correcting any defects and deterioration as I go.

He went through everything pretty good. Replaced inside and outside fuel pumps plus put in a new wire harness. Jetronics 2.3 ECM is a 544. Thank you for your reply :)

I think it is two model years too old. If it does have a diagnostic port, it will be located under the hood. Look for a black box on the fender well right behind the driver's side strut.

You may want to read about the LH 2.2 Fuel ECM work around for a no signal to the fuel pump relay. But this suggestion may only be related to LH 2.4.

Ok, I am going to buy this Volvo for $400. I used to have a 1985 240 wagon. Anyway, the ECM has been removed. I will be putting another in so I have a couple questions.
What are the steps for replacing it?
I've seen that I may need to reprogram it? If so, how do I do that?

On a 1987 there is nothing to reprogram. It's ECM is too primitive to have a learning capability.

1987 was barely out of the era of electrical mechanical control and before Artificial Intelligence. Get the same ECM and it should be a simple part swap. Volvo 240 wiring diagrams.

Ok he just told me he bought a used one from Ebay but it does not work either. any other ideas? He was told that the computer needed to be reprogrammed. That"s why I asked. The car isn't in front of me at this time so I don't have eyes on it. It's driving me crazy not having it here! LOL
