I assume everything is disconnected including the timing belt that is still attached in the first picture. If so the only three things holding the cam in place are the front and rear cam seals and the lower cam journels. Based on what you stated in your post it sounds like the cam is tilted and binding on the lower journals, most likely in the front. This is caused by the valve springs/tappets pushing up. If this is correct your problem is the cam is binding on the journals which is not good. You can confirm this by looking at how the cam sits in each of the journals - my guess you will see the back of the cam is lifted and the front is not.
Be careful here. You can break parts of the lower head if you muscle the cam. You need to get the cam level to remove the binding. I would think the safest approach to take is to put the upper cam cover back on and slowly tighten it back down until it is flush. Be careful so it goes down even.
Slowly and evenly loosen the upper cam cover and make sure both ends of the cam come up evenly - so they are parallel. You can aide this process by rotating the front and rear of the cam each time you loosen the upper cam.
Did you follow any write ups or shop manual? It should tell you the proper sequence to follow.

Ok now that was the perfect solution!! The number one did on TDC number five full valve over lap lifting the rear of the cam.
The T belt is off the cams.
I did read posts and some youtube.
The manual is a store in it self. I have dice but, as yet can not get Vida working.
Thank You very much for the post, why I did not think to put the cover back I will never know.

Daniel: The reason you did not think of it is simple - most cars do not have an once piece valve cover like Volvo. Usually they have individual cam caps. Took me a second to think of the solution as I have been playing with German cars that use individual cam caps.
VIDA can be tricky to get working - do you have the instruction/repair section working? (You can post a question on your VIDA/Dice issue and people will help you towards resolution) The reason I ask is during reassembly you want to position the cams properly. I don't recall how the 2.5T is set up - it may be that cam alignment is such that the lock tool can be installed. You just don't want to have the same problem on reassembly.
Hopefully someone will chime in as it has been a few years since I did this job.
What was the reason for pulling the cams?

I am pulling the head. 3 weeks after purchasing pining in #3 major loss of power. Borescope shows light renting on piston and head near the intake valve. All 4 valves seem to be intact but 100% loss in leak down test. Also leaking between 2,3 and 4 into intake and block. Scope shows all cyclenders in good shape other than #3.

Attached has initial placement guidelines. Rear lock tool goes on after rear cam seals get put on and before timing belt installation.
