You are correct. I should not have referred to it as a VVT hub.
Volvo calls it simply "Camshaft gear", FCP calls it "Camshaft Sprocket".

Though in my defense, it does vary the exhaust valve timing. :)

Always a good idea to take a used car to a qualified mechanic to inspect it before buying. Worth the $100 it costs. If the owner isn't ok with that, then you just got a free inspection.
