Hey everyone,
I just recently bought a 98 volvo s70 glt and as I was driving 4 days later, a check engine popped up. I'm in the works of trying to get it registered in Virginia so I need to get emissions, but a check engine light will immediately fail it. I need help getting a general direction on what to check, how to check it and how to fix it. I'm pretty handy, but I just want a direction before I get myself doing stuff unnecessarily. I really appreciate any replies and all the help!
Best regards
P.s. I have already checked and replaced the gas cap with one on my 99 s70 parts car. Will a Vaccum leak throw this code?
Urgent - 1998 S70 has a p0455 and p0442 - fails emissions Topic is solved

IIRC, if you disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes, the codes will clear.

If i'm not mistaken, you'll have to drive a bit after clearing the codes, so that the computer can cycle though the tests again. I've had an inspection (here in TX) rejected because I cleared the codes on my old XC90 immediately before taking it to the inspection station.
EDIT: my bad, I should have clicked through azureblue's link, that says the same!
For P0442, it might be the J hose on the EVAP canister:
My S70 is sitting in the driveway with an expired inspection because it is throwing this same error. I haven't had the chance to swap out the j-hose myself, yet, though.

UPDATE: so I found a crack on the J hose. Let's not talk about how much of a pain in the azz it was to remove those factory cramp hose clamps in one and half foot of clearance...
But anyways, would a small rip by the clamp cause it to throw a gross evap leak code? I have yet to get the J hose from ipd because no parts store has it around me.

A large leak on the Evap system is anything larger than 1 mm.
That split will cause P0455, yes.
That factory clamp makes it likely that the hose is original from 1998!

+1 on agreeing that is probably the source of your leak. I was fooled on one of my cars as it was split only on the top side out of sight. Once replaced it was ok. It has to be replaced anyway before you can be sure that is the only issue.
Dealers are expensive, but if you are in a hurry, most should be able to get it next day. I used to be able to get stuff from FCP in 2 days to Western Canada, so try them also.
