Next up/ Gas cap door

Sorry guys/gals but since purchasing my new/used car, there apparently a few more issues I still need to correct to gt things back to normal. I went to fill-up my first new tank of gas after work and it seems that the latching device that holds the gas door closed no longer works. I figured out finally where the button was (below the headlight switch) to release/open the door but after filling up I closed the door and there is no engagement to re-lock it from the outside world. Does anyone have a thought as to why this doesn't want to engage?

Well.... you never mentioned what year ,what make,or what model..... My 04 S60 .. after I get rolling about 7-10 miles an hour I can HEAR the little motor at the gas door engage, thus locking the fuel door....rrrrrrolling on!

If you couldn't get it open, but could after pushing the button, It's working properly. It isn't a pop release like most other cars. It's more like a door lock that locks the fuel door automatically when you start driving the car.

The car is a 2002 v70. OK, I did not realize that is is not a "pop-release" type fuel door like on my old '98 s70.
So you guys are saying that even after I come to a full stop and if I do not push the button on the dash, it will still be locked?

Interesting little differences. Swedish spec cars don't have a button. It locks and unlocks with the rest of the car.

You have to jump out and check it while you are still rolling to confirm this. Make sure someone YouTubes that, of course.

(The button releases the latch, it relocks at low speed on North American cars, according to the user manual)

When the car is new the gas door is spring loaded so that it stays shut until you get rolling and the lock pin engages. But the spring mechanism that holds the door shut is designed to break two days after you buy the car. In that case you either jury rig a fix to the spring, which I've done to one of our cars, or you do nothing, which I've done to the other car. If not repaired you just have to be careful to not turn any hard left-handers until you roll fast enough that the pin locks.

Tying the fuel door to the regular door locks is a bad idea. You're supposed to lock the car doors while you're pumping fuel and/or going inside the station/mini mart to help deter carjacking. If the fuel lid locks with the doors, you can't do that. Apparently this isn't a problem in Europe.
