intermittent "check stop lamp"

Post by jsonk »

Hey all,

I just bought a used 2006 xc90 and literally the next day, a 'check stop lamp' message has begun to intermittently pop up on the message screen. If I cut the engine off and turn it back on, the message goes away (usually) and both left and right brake lights DO light up. After a couple of minutes driving though, the message again comes on the the brake lights DO NOT light up.

I've read through these forums now for two days and I've seen other users with similar issues but I'm not sure if any of them have actually been resolved. I saw that it might be the brake light relay in the BEM so last night I opened the back hatch but I can't even see how anyone could actually fit their hand back there to swap out anything let alone even see the relay. I also read that the 2006 model doesn't even have a brake light relay and that it's hard wired into the BEM. So my question to you all is: Does the 2006 xc90 have a brake light relay that can be changed and if so, how does one even get access to the far side of the BEM?

Thanks. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

No relay. The brake lights are powered by the REM (Rear Electronics Module) Controled by the CEM (Central Electronics Module).

10/17 & 10/18 are the rear lights. 10/19 is the center brake light. I would be checking connection B:3 on the REM ... see attachment.

Thanks Rick I'll take a look at it tonight. On a side note, the pdf that you attached, is the whole booklet downloadable somewhere on the internet or on this website? I've been looking for a wiring schematic for the 06 but could only find 05 and 08 and higher.

I would start by investigating what your car is telling you, that is check your stop lamp. The system senses resistance and if it is higher or lower it will throw the light. You may have a poor connection or a failing bulb. On my 04 I have had similar light messages on working bulbs that when examined closely were a few cycles from failure. Fresh bulb and a cleaning of the socket and issue resolved.

Thanks SuperHerman. I didn't have a ton of time last night to work on it, but I did check the brake light bulbs and one of them did look as if it was ready to blow. It still worked but the glass was brown on one side of it. I replaced both right and left bulbs but I'm still getting the message. I didn't however check or replace the other bulbs in the brake light housing. Maybe I should have done that too while I had it all apart...ugh

Rick, I looked at the file you sent me yesterday and to be honest, on first glance, I thought it was just a schematic of the fuses and such but when I had a chance last night to sit down and look at it, I realized I'm not sure what all of that means. I can follow the chart and understand that B:3 is position on the REM but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to 'check' for. What exactly is B:3? Sorry, I've never had a vehicle with so many different electrical panels so I'm apparently in over my head a little. I'd like to save some money and do whatever work I can myself but if all else fails I'll bite the bullet and have a mechanic take a look.

B:3 Harness block B pin 3 on the REM, it is a yellow wire. Check it for a clean and undamaged connection.

Hey Guys,

Use to have exactly the same problem. Always getting the CHECK STOP LAMP but when checking the bulbs, they was OK.

So this is what I do to fix my issue. I remove rear lamps, then remove the bulbs from the socket connectors and sand the contacts inside the sockets. Also the metal contact that touch the side of the bulb, I bend it out a little more in order that it make a better and tight contact with the bulb.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Its look like when I was driving and some of the vibration of the ride make the bulb to make a false contact inside the socket and the car computer thinks you have a blow bulb and it give you this false CHECK STOP LAMP.

Hope this info help you

Good luck

I believe there's 2 relays in the rear fuse block associated with the brake lights.
